Crown Lengthening

Close-up of a dental crown placed on a dental model, showcasing accurate fit and realistic tooth anatomy. If you suffer from an excess of gum tissue causing what is known as a "gummy smile," a crown lengthening procedure may be the ideal solution to give you a perfect smile. Crown lengthening is also commonly referred to as an aesthetic gum lift or gum contouring, but these all define the same treatment. Lengthening your tooth and removing the excess gum will give you the confidence you need to show your radiant smile. Our experienced dental staff at Wildhorse Dental can help provide you with gum surgery. If you are interested in learning more about how crown lengthening can improve your smile, or if you want to know more about having the procedure done, give us a call at 636-537-0447.

What is Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening is a procedure designed to remove excessive gum tissue to lengthen the appearance of your teeth, give you an even gum line, and restore your smile. If you have a receding gum line, this procedure is used to restore the gum tissue to its original place. This procedure is most often considered an elective procedure since it is done mostly for cosmetic reasons and not medical ones.

However, it can be a medical treatment if you suffer from severe periodontal (gum) disease. The first step in periodontitis is to treat your gum disease, which may involve restorative dental cleaning or antibiotics. Afterward, a crown lengthening may be necessary to restore your gums to normal.

What are the Benefits of Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening can be used to restore your gums if you have experienced periodontal disease or a natural receding gum line. If you suffer from a gummy smile, it can lengthen your teeth to give you normal-sized teeth, improving your smile greatly. It can also even out your gum line. In most cases, an aesthetic gum lift is immediately noticeable and can improve your overall oral health care. Crown lengthening is usually performed in a single session at our office, making it a convenient procedure.

How Is the Crown Lengthening Procedure Performed?

A gum lift is a minor surgical procedure that can be done in our outpatient office. We begin by using a pen to draw your new gumline, so you can see how it will look. To perform your crown lengthening, our team will place you under a local anesthetic. This is necessary to avoid any pain associated with cutting and sculpting your delicate gum tissue so that you only feel the pressure. We then use a high-intensity laser beam to accurately cut away any excess gum tissue. Since we use a laser, it will also cauterize the blood vessels as we work on the gum line, which limits the bleeding that occurs. It also minimizes trauma to the gum tissue, which decreases swelling and increases recovery time. Additional surgery may be required if bone needs to be removed as well. Afterward, the gum is sutured snugly against the teeth, finishing the procedure.
