Dental Implants vs Dentures![]() What Is the Purpose of Dental Implants and Dentures?Dental implants and dentures are meant to improve the comfort and ease with which a person can chew food. The replacement of missing teeth supports facial muscles and improves speech, thus increasing overall self-esteem. Differences in ProcedureDental implants are surgically placed inside the jawbone. The jawbone is then allowed to heal for about two to three months before placing an abutment and dental crown on top of the metal implant. This means that the total dental implant treatment length is about six months, including the initial consultation and oral exam, tooth extraction, implant placement, healing, and then crown placement. Dentures, on the other hand, take around six weeks to three months to be made and fitted properly. Our dentist will take an impression of the gums and examine the bite and alignment of the upper or lower jaw. First, temporary dentures will be made to check if they need adjustments, and when the permanent set of dentures arrives they will be fitted properly. Difference in MaintenanceDental implants look and feel just like natural teeth, so their maintenance is also possible and easily done with standard dental hygiene practices like brushing, flossing, and regular oral checkups. Dentures, however, require special daily maintenance. Dentures must be soaked in a special cleaning solution overnight, which means a person cannot wear them at the time. Dentures also need cleaning every time a person eats something. Difference in Replacement NeedsDenture refitting and repair are necessary from time to time. People with dentures need a dental checkup at least once a year for the relining and repair of their dentures. Dental implants are permanent fixtures, and they do not need replacement. If taken care of properly, dental implants can last up to 30 years. However, sometimes the crown on top of the implant cracks or breaks and needs repair. Difference in Risk FactorsDentures are fitted using a less invasive method than dental implants. The most common complications that arise with dentures are ulcerations forming on gums and dentures not staying in place. Dental implants have fewer and easily treatable risk factors like infection at the implant site, nerve damage, or bruising on the gums and jawbone.
