The Effect of Missing Teeth on Your Jaw

Close up diagram showing how a space maintainer protects teeth from misalignment due to a missing tooth.Jawbone health is critical to maintaining a high degree of oral cavity health. Even with the best oral health practices of brushing and flossing, if the jawbone health is compromised, then the gums and teeth it supports will also be compromised. If a patient has suffered trauma to their jaw area or face, they should be evaluated right away to ensure no possible damage. If bone loss is detected, there are multiple treatment options available to correct the problem. Regeneration is the actual regrowth of lost bone tissue. The procedure requires sedation and is considered invasive. Without it, however, the situation will only worsen. If you have concerns about your jawbone health, please come to see us at our office located at Wildhorse Dental to get more information.

Bone Loss Causes

While most understand that there needs to be healthy bone mass in the jawbone, they are unaware of how jawbone health is maintained. It relies on the oppositional forces created every time the patient bites down. When a patient is suffering from tooth loss, whether a single tooth or multiple teeth, they lose those opposing forces. This leads to the jawbone-weakening at that location and can also lead to bone resorption.

Bone Regeneration

The regeneration process helps to stimulate bone growth and improve bone resiliency for the jawbone. This is important because the jawbone offers a solid base for other restorative surgeries to rely upon to support the different dental appliances. Bone grafts are usually the chosen process when it comes to regenerating new bone growth. Grafting tissue is taken from the patient's body and applied to the areas in need of regrowth. Once the grated tissue bonds with the patient's existing structure, it stimulates the regeneration of bone.
The process involves making a small incision by either using a scalpel or a soft tissue laser to expose the jawbone. If no infection or diseased tissue is found, then the procedure will continue.

The harvested material is then secured to the location on the jawbone so it will not move out of its appropriate place. This procedure is performed under anesthesia and is completed in a single office visit.

Is Bone Regeneration Necessary?

Jawbone resorption is a common occurrence, but it can easily be treated with bone grafts. Increasing bone regeneration greatly impacts the oral cavity health of the patient. It is considered preventative, but it can also have a lasting impact on the patient's overall medical health.
Typically, bone regeneration is a small component within the realm of a much larger restorative process. One example of this is the placement of dental implants. Without the proper bone structure in place to support them, they cannot be placed, and the patient will have to seek another option.

Any patient seeking dental implants as an artificial tooth option may need to consider bone grafts in order to shore up any lack in supportive bone mass. Patients can come to see us at Wildhorse Dental so we can perform a bone mass evaluation to determine what the best course of action is for their given situation.
