Mouth and Body Connection

Illustrated tooth holding a toothbrush surrounded by organs such as the heart, stomach, and liver, highlighting the connection between oral health and overall body health. While most people exercise to keep their bodies healthy, they fail to realize that their mouths need proper care too. They also rarely understand that the health of their mouths is directly linked to the health of their bodies. Since there is blood so close to the surface in the gums, it is easy for any infection to travel through the blood and infect the rest of the body. There are lymph nodes directly beneath the lower jaw that can quickly deliver an infection anywhere in the body. This is the same for infections and oral cancer.

Because of this undeniable link, it is very important patients brush and floss and perform self-examinations looking for any abnormal tissue or discolorations in their mouths. If patients have questions or would like to come in for an evaluation, they can reach us at Wildhorse Dental.

The Truth About Oral Cancer

Cancer still is a word most people do not like to hear when being evaluated. It should be known, however, that treatment and recovery have both improved over recent years. While patients may have heard of oral cancer, they might not realize how dangerous it can be. Most people are more concerned about lung, pancreatic, or bone cancer. They then fail to realize that a patch on their tongue or inside of their cheek might be cancerous.

While oral cancer can be serious, most discolorations or sores in the mouth prove to be benign. It is important, however if a patient has found an odd patch in their mouth to come in and have it evaluated.

Other Serious Concerns

Other than oral cancer, the next most serious condition which is typically diagnosed is periodontal disease. This is a progressive disease, one which cannot be cured once it moves beyond the initial stage. At its worst, it can cause devastating tooth loss and bone loss to the upper and lower jawbones. This can lead to other complications because the teeth will begin to shift to the newly vacated space.

Due to the teeth that are lost, they no longer apply direct pressure to those teeth opposing them, and the bone and gum structure supporting those teeth will begin to weaken. The jawbone needs constant pressure in order to maintain its strength. When this doesn't happen, it will begin to deteriorate. When the jawbone begins to resorb, it can cause dangerous infections which can lead to other complications including, arthritis, diabetes, and even heart disease.

Prevention

Patients actually have control when it comes to developing periodontal disease. Simply brushing and flossing at a minimum of twice a day, and coming in for regular examinations and cleanings, can greatly minimize the chances of contracting periodontal disease.

While vital to overall health, many patients fail to realize the connection between oral health and overall health and pay the consequences. Come in for an evaluation today at Wildhorse Dental. We can assess your oral health needs and schedule your cleaning appointment while we are at it. Contact us by phone at 636-537-0447.
