Reporting from a recent article in the Boston Globe (10/31, Weisman), researchers found a critical flaw in the way prospective sleep apnea patients are diagnosed, and that one in five of those individuals who were denied treatment should be eligible. Treatment options for those patients could be  a variety of treatments including CPAP, oral appliance therapy (OAT), behavioral modification, weight loss,  and surgery.  Dr. Earl Larson at Wildhorse Dental, a Qualified Member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) indicates that although consultation with a Medical Sleep Specialist is always the first step in treatment of sleep apnea, in many instances of mild to moderate sleep apnea, oral appliances may be very successful as first line therapy. He recommends that for those individuals, a discussion with a qualified dentist should be an important step towards deciding on treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea.
